Division 2 Roundup - Week 20
Race for Runners-Up Spot Remains in the Balance
There were just two matches in Division 2 this week, as the planned Mursley Hawks (4th) v Leighton Buzzard Van Hire (2nd) match had to be called off due to a power cut in Mursley, which also meant the two other proposed matches at the Hall, that night, had to be rearranged. The Division 2 match has been rescheduled for 2nd April.
Little Horwood Wooden Tops were in action, however, and leap-frogged Van Hire by a point, to go second, although Van Hire still have a match in hand on them. The result for Wooden Tops was a perhaps disappointing (for them) 5-5 draw at seventh-placed Milton Keynes Cavaliers, despite Cavaliers being a player short. Both Anjana Navalkissoor and Chris Paddon of Cavaliers picked up two singles wins, as well as the doubles against Bill Higgins and Paul Reynolds of Wooden Tops, whilst for Wooden Tops, Bill and Paul each picked up one win, and Andy Hooper completed the Wooden Tops team.
In the other match that was played, fifth-placed Woburn Sands Mosquitoes gained a 6-4 win against sixth-placed Open University Shockwaves, to move up to fourth spot, three points ahead of Hawks, but retain a match in hand. James Molloy picked up three singles wins for Mosquitoes, with Rob McPheat and Andy Jenkins each winning one singles, plus the doubles against Shockwaves' Yifan Liu and Tiger Tan. For Shockwaves, Yifan and Tiger each won two singles, with Yi Cao being the third Shockwaves player.
The two results confirm that Shockwaves will finish sixth, with Cavaliers, who have already completed their matches, finishing seventh.
Next week sees some crucial matches in the battle for the runners-up spot, behind Greenleys Princes who have already won the title. Wooden Tops (2nd) play their final match of the season against fifth-placed Hawks, whilst its third versus fourth as Van Hire take on Mosquitoes. Sixth-placed Shockwaves entertain Division 2 champions, Princes. The final match in Division 2 will then be the following week, with the rearranged Hawks versus Van Hire match.
