COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS (OVER 60s) REPORT
SUPER SUE STRIKES AGAIN

A busy weekend at BATTS Harlow for the Bucks senior players in the final (2nd of 2) round of matches in the County Championships.

1st team matches – Div 1B

Results – v Surrey 4-6 , v  Kent 5-5,  v  Hampshire 5-5

We continued our close sets of results from the first weekend with 2 more draws and a narrow defeat.  Alan Cherry was outstanding in winning all of his 6 singles, which kept us in contention throughout.  The rest of the squad were Michael Wilkins and myself (MK) and Nick Hansell & Mary Heffernan (High Wycombe).  The standard of play this year has been much higher than in previous seasons, when we have finished runners-up in 3 of past 4 years compared to a modest 5th place (of 8) this time round despite a much stronger squad.

Near neighbours Beds finished top and move up to the Premier.  Congratulations to them. Middlesex finished bottom and go down.

2nd team matches – Div 2

Results – v Northants 5-5,  v  Warks 2nds 4-6,  v Warks 3rds 4-6

Bucks entered a 2nd team for the first time and they also finished mid table in this newly created division.  Our star player here was Sue Lewis, unbeaten over 9 Womens Singles and Mixed Doubles, a sensational performance.  Pick of her wins was her doubles success with Terry Lau over Northants’ Christine Scaysbrook and National over 60s champion John Fuller.  Andy Smith and Wycombe’s Elroy Hull completed the Bucks team while Iain Lindsay was in the Northants’ squad.

Northants should gain promotion along with divisional winners Essex 3rds.  Russell Penn was in the Beds 2nds team which finished last.
