MERVYN ON THE BALL AGAIN

A good point well earned for my Topspin team against 2nd placed Monarchs. Only a single win to show for the night’s endeavours but, nonetheless, another good match for Mervyn Kelly who remains Topspin’s only set winner in the last 3 fixtures. This time round he claimed the scalp of Monarchs debutant Matt Rayner in straight games with some good shot selection and accurate two winged hitting.

Otherwise, little to crow about besides perhaps my 5 gamer with Martin Hall. I took the 1st and let a good lead slip in the 2nd. Taking a break between games, as I do nowadays, my old pal Vic Sutton (there for another match) said to me “You threw that one away”. It didn’t help, especially as I won the 3rd before Martin swept me away in the 4th and 5th. Always a pleasure to play Martin though.

Monarchs star man Tomek Nowakowski was keen to play his singles sets straight off and clear off. No problem there. He won them easily enough despite Topspin skipper Russell Penn getting off to a flying start, smashing forehand winners past his opponent’s famous formidable defence for fun. But it didn’t last too long and soon Tomek was well in command. With another hat-trick in the bag Tomek stayed on to play the doubles, which I thought a bit odd for someone once desperate to get away, but Russell generously acceded to his request.

So, another valuable point for us down at the bottom of the League in a very enjoyable match.

Man of the match : Tomek Nowakowski
