Match Report – MK Blades v Mursley Hawks (Division 2)

The one outstanding match in Division 2, between struggling Milton Keynes Blades and fourth placed Mursley Hawks, has now been played, meaning all teams just have two League fixtures remaining.

Blades regulars Bill Tyler and Mark Thomas were joined by top of the Division 3 Averages, Malcolm Whetstone (who had also won 6 out of 6 when playing up, previously).  For Hawks it was Martin Johnson, Mick O’Mahony and Ian Spanswick.

Bill started well for Blades, with his pimples bat causing Martin some problems, as they shared legs one to four as one end of the table seemed to be favourable, but Martin had the 'good' end in game five and just sneaked through at 11-8 in the decider.  Malcolm and Mick then played out three very close legs, with Malcolm’s solid defending causing form man, Mick, a few problems early on, but despite dropping the third leg, Mick found his form to win comfortably in the end, in four games.  Mark, despite suffering from a cold, put Blades on the scoresheet, but only just - as in another set that ebbed and flowed, he hung on to beat Ian 11-9 in the fifth, the fourth time this season Mark has managed that scoreline against Hawks!

Hawks then moved to 3-1 ahead with a win in the Doubles, as Martin and Mick defeated Bill and Mark in four games, after the first three games had been very close.

Martin extended the Hawks lead against Malcolm, picking off regular winners, to win in straight games, and Ian took Hawks to 5-1 up, after a very tight five gamer against Bill, coming back in game five, after Bill had pulled back from two legs down and been ahead in the decider!  Mick then maintained his winning record, very comfortably beating Mark in three games.

Malcolm grabbed his first win of the night, defeating Ian in three straight games, although things were getting very close in games two and three, with some excellent rallies at the end, with Malcolm just taking game three 14-12.  Martin completed his maximum, against an out of sorts Mark, who was full of cold and in a very cold Hall, and shortly afterwards, Mick did likewise against Bill, to make the final score 8-2 to Hawks, and also to extend his winning run to 17 singles on the trot.

The result moves Hawks up to within eleven points of the two leaders and ten points of third, but barring a combination of huge upsets, are destined to finish in fourth place.  Blades, meanwhile, were already going to finish eighth and last, and are now 36 points adrift of seventh spot.

Player of the Match : Mick O’Mahony.
