Hilary Warton - obituary and funeral arrangements
It is with immense personal sadness that I report the death on July 1 of Hilary Warton, our friend, colleague, committee member and Life Member of the League. Her strong and cheerful personality will be much missed by all those who knew her.
Hilary played in the lower divisions of our league for many years until, unfortunately, mobility issues made this difficult. A left-hander with a strong forehand smash, Hilary was always a keen enthusiast for the game and enjoyed playing doubles, possibly more so than singles. Over the years, Hilary played for the Newport Pagnell, Woburn Sands and Milton Keynes Clubs.
Hilary was a committee member for many years and was often a strong voice oozing common sense in committee discussions where there was occasional disagreement. In particular, Hilary was always a very strong supporter of both lady players within the league and of young players, providing much support and encouragement as new players entered the league and progressed up the divisions. Hilary was voted as a Life Member of the League in recognition of this.
Hilary’s interest in the League and news of various players continued even after her league playing days had ended. This included making very welcome and supportive visits to practice sessions at Newport Pagnell, even after her physical restrictions made it impossible for her to join in.
Many members of the League will recall that Hilary had been an important support to her late husband Nick, who had filled many committee posts over the years, but Hilary always remained a strong individual presence, despite her short stature.
Our thoughts are with Hilary's family, daughter Karen, son-in-law Chris, grandsons Daniel and Josh.
Hilary’s funeral will be held at the Oak Chapel at Crownhill Crematorium at 2pm on Wednesday 23rd July. Those attending are invited to wear a touch of purple, Hilary’s favourite colour.
Hilary’s family has indicated that flowers should be restricted to the family. If anyone wishes to make a donation in Hilary’s memory, this should be in favour of Macmillan Cancer Support, through https://www.macmillan.org.uk.
