PEERLESS PAUL UNBEATEN AS HIT N HOPE SHOCK TOPSPIN
On the night both teams started without key players as Topspin were without talisman Dave Wackrill (hence I was ordered to write the match report by Russell) whilst Hit n Hope started without the in-form Ivor Howard.
Paddy Patel was called up from Division 2 for Topspin and acquitted himself well; taking games in all three sets, but in the end he failed to trouble the scorer.
Paul Tompkins had just the one win in the corresponding fixture in week one but tonight he showed what he is capable of with three fine wins, including a 3-2 win in the match of the evening against Russell Penn.
Earlier on Russell got his Topspin team off to a good start with a 3-1 win against Marco Hahn, only for Paul Tompkins to level with a 3-1 win against Mervyn Kelly and Mike Ainsworth to overcome the resistance of Paddy Patel by the same scoreline.
However, when Topspin roared to an 11-8 win in the fifth game in the doubles, the match was once again evenly poised.
The match of the evening followed as Paul edged past Russell 11-7, 12-14, 3-11, 11-5, 11-6. Once again, Hit n Hope had a narrow lead.
Marco then doubled the lead with a win in the fifth against Paddy before Mervyn Kelly pulled the score back to 4-3 against Mike.
In the eighth set Paul secured at least a draw for his team with a 3-1 win against Paddy but then Russell pulled his Topspin team back from the brink with a 3-0 game of cat and mouse (Ed: Russell’s words, not mine) against Mike Ainsworth.
This left the ever-reliable Marco Hahn to seal the match for Hit n Hope with a 3-1 win against Mervyn Kelly as Topspin slumped to only their second defeat of the season.
