Visitors Data improved their chances of promotion with an 8-2 win in a hard-fought and entertaing match. As has been the case so often for Vantage this season, the match score suggests an easy victory for their opponenets, which was far from reality. Darren Ward is now unbeaten in his last 5 matches and has only lost 4 times in his last 30 sets, to likely Top 8 opponents, Andy Smith, Julie Snowdon, Fabrice Spelta & Iain Lindsay. He was well supported by an uninhibited treble from Rob McPheat, with some powerful attacking shots from both wings, and a brace from James Molloy.
After the home side lost the opening 3 singles, the match appeared to alter with the doubles, as so often has happened for Vantage. Sue Lewis and Tony Ardis maintained their excellent record this season, beating Darren and Rob in a fine doubles over 4 legs, taking the 4th 12-10. to notch up their 8th win from 11 doubles.Sue followed this up with a good 4 leg win over James, in what is her final League appearance this season. Her sets against Darren and Rob were decided in 3 legs each, with both demonstrating theri powerful hitting styles. Despite plenty of endeavour, neither Tony nor Mike Howard could find a winning formula on the night. In his opening singles, Tony held a 2-1 leg advantage over Rob but could not take his opportunities in the 4th, which Rob won13-11 before taking the final leg in style 11-6. Tony played well but could not take a leg from either Darren or James. Mike was easily beaten by James in the opening set of the night, but pushed both Rob and Darren hard before each secured a 4 leg win. Mike had chances in each to take the set to a final leg, but could not find a way through, losing in the 4th to Rob by 14-12 and to Darren by 15-13. Having seemingly managed to find a way to stop the Data pair's attacking fllair, Mike was unable to score with his own attack at crucial times against each of them, and paid the penalty.
