SUB PETE RESCUES TOPSPIN FROM WIPE-OUT
My paper thin 3-man Topspin squad were again depleted by Mervyn Kelly’s impromptu holiday arrangements making him unavailable for this clash with the champions. Given the circumstances we were delighted to obtain the services of Pete Tillotson, up from Div 1, at short notice to accompany regulars Russell Penn and myself. Spinners went with Alan Cherry, Jecu Aurelian and Gary Jones and so long as Gary was in fine form, which for the most part he was, the outcome surprised no-one in a match done and dusted in under 2 hours.
As the straight games victories piled up it looked like a 30 game wipe-out was the order of the day, a fate already experienced by relegation rivals Phoenix this season, and this would have been the case but for Pete stopping the rot against Gary at set no.8. The situation looked bleak when he lost the first game to Gary 3-11, but then Pete made a great recovery, winning the second 11-1 and holding numerous game points in the third, by far the most entertaining of the evening, in a game that was eventually lost 17-15 with normality restored. Pete always takes a long time of an evening to wind up his big two-winged topspin style of play and was (at last) getting into full flow for this one.
Earlier, Alan had beaten Pete 11-0, 11-2, 11-0, in his opening set, a score-line I haven’t seen the like of in 48 years of Premier play.
Man of the match : Alan Cherry
