ANDY SMITH IS HAT-TRICK MAN AGAIN

“Oh no” I thought “not again” as the early sets dribbled away from a sluggish Topspin in a re-rerun of last week, only worse. Pumas were fast out the blocks but then they had plenty to play for, the first team to topple the unbeaten League leaders, and they took their opportunity well. We were so traumatised in losing the first 10 games of the match, that, when we did win one at last (game 2 in the doubles) we immediately went 0-9 down in the next one and that was another set lost to take the match score to 4-0. I temporarily halted the slump but then it became 5-1 as Andy Smith beat Russell Penn, winning the 3rd game 11-8 from 4-8 down.

But you can never write us off and Mervyn Kelly hit back straight away by beating Chris Belton in straight games and Russell followed suit by outhitting Julie Snowdon to set up an exciting finish. Chris is always a bundle of trouble to me so I was pleased enough to stay in the game against him in the 9th set. I took an early lead in the 5th , changing ends at 5-2 which extended to 10-6. But no lead is big enough against Chris, who came storming back to 10-9 before top-edging yet another intended forehand winner and hit the ball, thankfully, over my head.

The stage was set for another epic recovery, which seemed well on the cards as Mervyn had beaten Andy in the Summer League just a short time ago. Hopes were raised, when Mervyn easily took the opening game, before being crushed as the ace defender summoned up all his wiles to turn the tables on the Topspin man. So no glorious ending for us this time. Well played Pumas, we must take a leaf out of your book and start the matches much better.
