A shame that we at Topspin could not repeat our earlier whitewash over Premier relegated Powers, but 8-2 was still a great result over a team containing Minesh Pitamber and Pete Tillotson, neither of whom played last time. Unsurprisingly Minesh and Pete won the Powers points between them, albeit in desperately close finishes in deciding games against Mervyn Kelly. Those finishes were the story of Mervyn’s season, so near and yet so far.

Russell Penn played with a steely determination for a magnificent hat-trick and I was unbeaten too. Then together we stormed the doubles set, taking the 2nd from 7-10 down and winning the 3rd 11-0. Mark Moore completed the Powers line up and was an improved player from last year.

This result puts Topspin firmly back in the promotion race as news has filtered through that St. Christopher Van Hire’s star man Biao Wang will play his last match of the season for them tomorrow (Wednesday). Without his guaranteed wins Van Hire could well struggle in the remaining matches. All to play for now.
