TOPSPIN BACK ON TRACK

Topspin skipper Russell Penn was indisposed for this match, forcing the first change in the regular Penn/Kelly/Wackrill  line-up since March 2017, a sequence of 28 matches. MK Classics division 2 player Masoud Nassor took his place and won a hat-trick. Masoud’s a great player to have in the wings as, on his day, he can beat anyone in this division with his fast attacking style. I recall a Summer League match I was playing in a few year’s ago when he beat the League’s 2014 Mens Singles champion Julian Adams. I hesitate to suggest that this was his best ever win but it must at least be a top 10 contender.

Topspin stopped the rot tonight with our first win in 4 matches, albeit against the bottom side who had Mike Howard replaced by Glen Davison of division 2 Gondolas, playing in 2 matches simultaneously. Tony Ardis showed flashes of his old self and scored Vantage’s only singles win when beating Mervyn with his strong forehand working well. Sue Lewis completed their side as always.

The formidable Tony/Sue partnership have won over twice as many doubles (5) than Topspin have managed all season (2), so another win for them here was no surprise, in straight games too against Masoud and Mervyn. We can change the line-up but we can't change the result.
