CENTENARY BLUES

This was my 100th MK League appearance for Topspin, so a 10-0 defeat was no way to commemorate the landmark. More appropropriately though, it was against my previous team. And it was only the 5th time I’ve been on the wrong side of a Topspin whitewash, which isn’t bad really for a team of our standard.. Paul Tompkins filled in for us this week and what a whirlwind 28 days it’s been for him since signing for MK team Powers - with 4 appearances in Div 1 plus a further 3 in the Premier for different sides. He joined Russell Penn and me as we faced the core Sasaki trio of Michael Wilkins, Nicolas Wong and William Kit Liang, who lodged their first whitewash of the year with William clocking his first maximum too. We won just the 3 games all night although over a third of the lost games were decided by 2 point margins, which is a high proportion in a 10-0 match. Furthermore, the only players who have been ever-present for their respective teams this season in the division (Nicolas, Russell, me) all played here.

Nicolas, in particular, was very sharp with straight game wins and even had time for a mid match knock with coach Jon Hall, which obviously benefited his play. This brought his total number of wins in this cycle of matches alone to 12, which is more than anyone else in the League, so he’s in great form at present after an indifferent start to the season.

One centenary down for me but another coming up soon as I have now played the legend that is Michael Wilkins on 99 occasions - so roll on the 100th.

Man of the match : Nicolas Wong
