It was a case of broad smiles all round in the Topspin camp when we saw that Andy Smith wasn’t on the Pumas team-sheet. While not exactly our nemesis, Andy did win more sets against us last season than anyone except Jamie Hendy (both 6). And while we hammered Jamie’s team 8-2 (and their only defeat) we failed to beat Pumas even once over the 3 matches.

So, with the main man out of the equation it was an opportunity to ‘fill our boots’, which we certainly did tonight, running out easy winners. We remained pretty solid while only Julie Snowdon offered any resistance for Pumas. She was her usual feisty self, coming off the back of a successful Womens British League weekend (Julie reprsents MK Vixens in Division 3), while Chris Belton made too many mistakes and Keith Carrington never got going at all.

I beat Julie in 4 games before she played the set of the night against Russell. They had their customary quick action fast hitting encounter with Julie seemingly having the upper hand when leading 9-2 in the 5tn game. But Russell came storming back to 8-10 before he conceded the final point. Then Julie moved on to bag a brace playing very well against an in-form Mervyn over 4 games.

The only other set we conceded was the doubles, losing for the second week running, which is becoming a bit of a concern. In fact we’d already lost 2 doubles this season before we lost our first singles set!

So, no Andy tonight to trouble us and  I wonder if St.Christopher Van Hire will be as obliging next week and leave out Biao Wang.
