DEADLY DERICK STRIKES AGAIN BUT TOPSPIN TRIUMPH

Only four weeks ago MK Sharks’ Derick Rodrigues was named Division 1 ‘player of the week’ following his starring role for MK Phoenix in their victory over MK Hit ‘n’ Run. And here he was again, back in this Division doing a similar job for beleaguered MK Powers, who needed a substitute as only 2 of their 6 player squad were available for this top of the table clash. He responded to the call with an emphatic couple of wins over my team-mates Mervyn Kelly and Russell Penn, albeit in a 6-4 defeat for his team.

Although Powers’ regulars Clare Styles and Keith Carrington took full advantage of one of Mervyn’s off nights, Russell and I did enough to bring home a valuable win for our Topspin side that ended our opponents terrific 100% win record. Not that Mervyn did not contribute, as he paired up with Russell for a tight 11-9 in the 5th game doubles win, the doubles often being THE decisive set in these tight matches.

I had a strange evening myself with a calf muscle strain cramping my style. It ‘went ping’ during my 2nd set of the night against Derick. Although I was ahead at the time I thought he was bound to catch up and was amazed when he didn’t. That encouraged me to play on, particularly as the match result was still in the balance, and I subsequently beat Clare in the final set of the night. I know that playing against an injured player can be very off-putting for an opponent and I think I benefited from that scenario, plus I am very lucky that my playing ‘style’, such as it is, does not involve too much running around anyway.

So, it turned out to be a great win for Topspin.
