TOPSPIN TOPDOGS

It’s great to be back playing competitely again, as I’m sure everyone in the League will agree.

We at Topspin suffered relegation from the Premier last year, 7th place not being good enough to retain our top flight status, and am looking to bounce back at the first opportunity. Our opening opponents here, club-mates up from Division 2, will themselves want to establish a foothold in the Division so a hard fought match was expected and did not disappoint.

I kicked off against Paul Tompkins and was thumped 11-0 in the opening game before establishing decent leads in the 2ns & 3rd games which Paul fought back from to win in straight games, although he never won another game all night. Fortunes swayed to and fro in the 2nd set with Russell Penn struggling to beat Ivor Howard 11-8 in the 5th to level the scores. Mervyn Kelly then started brilliantly against Marco Hahn and was 2 games up with a 9-8 lead in the 3rd before Marco got his big spin style flowing nicely to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. The doubles proved crucial for us with a rare victory for the Russell/Mervyn combo, just their 2nd from the last 13, in a fine gritty performance to square the match once more.

The even contest also went to 3-3 before we pulled away into an unassailable 6-3 led, only for me to lose again at the end, this time round to Ivor, also in straight games.

So a decent match in which Topspin skipper Russell was outstanding with a fine hat-trick. and a wonderful quote from a frusrrated Paul to his team-mates in between games against him. “He keeps hitting the ball back” Paul was heard to say.

Man of the match : Russell Penn.
