TWENTY-ONE UP A BIG DEAL FOR TOPSPIN
Despite my Topspin team’s personnel problems (well chronicled in these posts) we always endeavour to field a full side for each match, not just for our own sakes but also our opponents. This week we were delighted to give a Premier debut to MK Sharks Derick Rodrigues, alongside regulars Russell Penn and myself. The Warriors skipper Ricky Taiwo brought along Shrishlal Basant Rai and Ameya Phatak. Shrishlal was keen to get away early as he had a new baby at home and we were glad to accommodated his request for a change in the doubles spot from 4 to 10 in order that he could finish first at set no. 7. Had he not spent so much time in between games discussing his tactics with his team-mates he could have knocked off much earlier than he actually did!
In a competitive match we took mid table Warriors to a 5th set on 3 occasions, winning one of them which was highly significant to our camp as it brought up our 21st point of the season, one more than the record lowest points total in Premier Division history, a record we are happy for Pete Tillotson’s Powers’ team to keep all to themselves.
Russell played well for our solo win, a 3-straight demolition of Ameya and our first singles victory since the last day in November. After a barren December/January, hopefully a new month brings with it a new hope and the opportunity for a change in fortune. Derick was in fine form following his hat-trick against Woburn Sands Mosquitos the night before and played well throughout the match. In his best effort he stood at 5-5 in the decider against Ameya before going down 6-11.
