TOPSPIN TWOSOME IN TOP FORM
Good to report that my MK Topspin side are back on the winning track after 3 consecutive defeats. Staying with the ‘3’ theme this was the 3rd time this season we have beaten Sharks, who led the table for the first 3 weeks before settling into what has been for them an almost permanent 3rd position throughout this campaign.
My own contribution was neglible though with 3 defeats, all in straight games too, against thel trio of Rupert Greyling, Sarah Hudson and Abhay Tijare.
The victory was all down to the excellent form shown on the night by Jit Pitamber and Russell Penn, snarling all the sets between them, though ‘the one that got away’ – Russell losing to Rupert – was by far the most interesting. Russell was all over him for the first part with his fast aggressive style finely tuned when taking a commanding 2 game and 10-6 in the 3rd game lead. Then disaster. He took his foot off the pedal and played more conservatively to allow Rupert back in the contest, losing the next 6 points in the process and conceding the game. I think Rupert was as surprised as anyone by that turn of events and he took full advantage and blossomed himself in games 4 and 5 with his own array of attacking shots to beat a now shattered Russell, who still had Sarah to play. Thankfully, he recovered his mojo, going toe to toe with her in a fierce hitting contest, winning the big points in a closely fought set.
Jit had earlier enjoyed his usual lightening fast battle with Sarah, just edging her out and also had a close run in with Abhay, who recovered from a 2-game deficit to take a 6-3 lead in the decider before Jit came back to win. And the doubles was the best I’d seen Jit/Russell play together as they had a poor record coming into this match against a Rupert/Sarah combo with just 1 defeat in 6 themselves.

SHIRTY STAT – It was great to see all players of both sides wearing their own team’s dedicated sports shirt. Probably the only time this season this has occured anywhere in the League’s 8 Divisions.
