JIT RIDES TO THE RESCUE
Former Topspin member Jit Pitamber stepped in at the last minute to help out his old team and ended up being the hero of the hour when snatching a terrific draw for his ex buddies Russell Penn and myself. Jit was at the MK club-room anyway representing Div 1 side Powers in their relegation battle with Pioneers and was keen to offer his services when Topspin suffered a late withdrawal. Many thanks go to both Sasaki and Pioneers for facilitating the occasional change in playing order in both matches to allow for uninterupted progress on both tables.
Sasaki had their own player problems (as always) in fielding a full side on a Tuesday evening and this week gave the third spot to Pioneers squad man Andy Frearson to play alongside regulars Michael Wilkins and Nicolas Wong.
My Topspin trio managed to overcome the challenge of Andy and ‘topped and tailed’ a good night’s work with terrific wins in the first and last sets played. Russell took full advantage of a rather lethargic Michael in the opener to post his first ever win over the Leighton Buzzard man (after many years of trying!) for an early 71st birthday present. Then, in the final set played, Jit powered his way past Nicolas to ensure us a share of the spoils. A great team performance.
Super stat : This was my 100th encounter with Michael. We first played against each other at Leighton Buzzard tennis club in 1990 when my AHW team of David Gatiss, Brian Mayfield and myself beat Hall club’s Michael, Dave Gilbert and Ivan Brown 10-0. Those were the days my friends !!!
Man of the match : Jit Ptamber
