Pumas started their season in fine vein, beating 2-player Vantage 5-2 on the night and 8-2 overall. Vantage only had Sue Lewis available  of their regular players, Tony Ardis being away and Mike Howard sideliined by injury. Glen Davison of division 2 team Lagondas enthusiastically substituted.
Despite the scores, the singles sets were not all plain sailing for the home side.
Sue Lewis of Vantage took the opening against Andy Smith 11-9 but Andy brought his experience to bear to overcome the difficulties arising from Sue's expert use of a bat with pimples out on both sides and took the next 3 legs.. Julie Snowdon then followed up her excellent guest appearance in the Premier division for MK Topspin on Monday by beating Glen  in 3 legs 11-7. 11-8. 11-8, with the pace of her forehand play in particular causing difficulties for the counterhitting Glen, who acquitted himself very well against a more experioenced player who iis currently on-form.
A remarkable doubles set followed. The very experienced doubles pair of Andy Smith and Chris Belton were playing an untried combination of Sue/Glen. The home team seemed to have everything under control , taking the first 2 legs 12-10, 11-6 and moving to a 10-6 lead in the third, seemingly headiong for an easy win. Sue and Glen had other ideas, forcing the leg to deuce and winning it 14-12. The pattern was repeated in the next leg, with Andy/Chris again in the ascendancy at 10-8, but eventually losing it 16-14. The final leg was nip and tuck, with the Sue/Glen pair taking the lead for the first time at 10-9 and converting their first match point, having saved 11 match points in total between the 3rd and 4th legs.
Julie then achieved a straightforward win against Sue in 3 legs to ease any concerns the home side might have following the doubles. Andy followed with a similar win agianst Glen (the final 3 sets being played out of order) although Glen's return of Andy's forehand smash brougt him a number of points over the 3 legs and ensured that Andy had to work for his win. For the home side, Chris played the final two sets, first against Sue and finsihing off the night against Glen. Chris struggled to cope with Sue's bat and left-handed playing style, despite taking the first leg 11-8. Sue was able to take control and won the next 3 legs without too much difficulty to record her first singles win of the season. The final set was a fast and furious, but very entertaining, one between Chris and Glen, with a number of high-quality rallies played at considerable pace, which both players prefer. Glen took the first leg comfortably, but Chris fought back to take the next 3, to end a good evening's table tennis which was unfortunately limited to 7 sets.
