Titans put one hand on the trophy with emphatic win
Here we are, at the tail end of the season and whilst there are still two matches to play, this really is the Titans title to lose now.
The usual trio of Nick Howard, Guy Sparrow and Craig Brown, fresh from his excellent run to the MK Open Quarter Final recently “visited” their stable mates, Phoenix consisting of Super Merv Phillips, Ivor Howard and playing up from Division Two, Andy Frearson.
The night almost got off to an explosive start as the newly crowned MK Champion, Nick Howard let a 2-0 lead slip against Merv before sealing the win in a comfortable 5th.
No such dramas for Craig and Guy as they beat Andy and Ivor in 3 comfortable sets, before Brown and Howard wrapped up their 16th doubles win of the year against Ivor and Merv.
The rest of the night almost went to form, as Howard sealed his hat-trick against Ivor and Andy, as did Craig against Andy and Ivor.
Such is the depth of table tennis in MK, you could have easily confused some of Andy’s rallies and shots against Guy as 2 Premier players playing each other. But it was the Titan who came out victorious in 4 quality ends.
But Super Merv was not to be denied on the night, and despite losing the 3rd to Sparrow, he sealed a very fine 3-1 victory at the end of the day.
With Monarchs sweeping Sasaki 10-0 it leaves Titans 8 points ahead with two matches to play.
Monarchs would need to win their remaining two matches 10-0 and hope the Titans can only muster a draw and 6-4 win at the very best for the title to swing back to Greenleys.
Cup week next week, so the drama will have to wait until the end of the month before this epic season drawn to a conclusion.
