A good result for promotion hopefuls Van Hire, although the match was not as straightforward as the score of 8-2 would suggest. Although only 2 sets lasted more than 3 legs, there was plenty of endeavour by the away side, with12 out of 34 legs played going to deuce and another 3 being decided 11-9.
For the home side, Dave Broome started the evening off with a straight sets win against Mike Howard, followed by a first win of the season for Tony Ardis of Vantage against Paul Haigh to level the match. Biao Wang ovecame the pimpled bat of Sue Lewis for an easy win before partnering Dave in a tight 3-leg doubles win against Sue/Tony. Paul recovered from his earlier defeat, using his forehand well to power past Mike. At that point, with a 4-1 lead by 8.50pm, an early night seemed likely.
Set 6, between Dave and Sue, turned into a marathon 5 leg set, with 3 legs going to deuces. Dave appeared to have taken the initiative in the final leg, securing a 10-6 lead but Sue had other ideas, recovering to take the leg to deuce. Dave had more chances than Sue to win before Sue finally took the leg 21-19 after she had saved 11 match points!
Sue's next set, against Paul, was another long one in which the first leg was won by Sue 18-16. Again the match went to 5 legs, but Sue could not repeat her earlier heroics and Paul won his second set of the night. Sue had played a marathon 274 points during the evening, winning 124 of them (for comparison, Biao only played a total of 167 points, Paul played 222 and Dave played 247).
Biao then beat Tony before completing his maximum on the night by taking his set against Mike, who forced Biao to 13-11 in two of the legs, but could not avoid a personal 0-9 leg evening. The evening ended at 10.40 pm with another 3 leg win for the home team, this time for Paul over Tony, although again the win was not easy as Tony was unable to take some opportunities in crucial points during the first 2 legs.
The home players acknowledged that Vantage's efforts on the night deserved a better result, but even at this early stage of the season, it highlights the importance of getting over the winning line in close games for teams at both the top and bottom of the table
