Kings overcome some “hard” opposition

With the clink and clank of not only one hard bat, but TWO, you’d be excused for thinking you’d taken a step back in time. The Kings were hosting both Ian Johnston and Dave Wells (making his MK debut), and both were rocking their 1950’s hard bats…….
The Monarchs were joined by evergreen Martin Hall, putting the CHO back in CHO-lay…..
The Kings fielded their 3rd different team of the year. Nick Howard and Matt Haynes were joined by the Ginger Ninja from Northampton, Matt Horrocks.
Whilst I’d love to write what an absolute spectacle it was for the fans, I’m afraid this was a bit of a damp squib, with only 4 matches going to 4 sets, and none going to 5.
Dave Wells played his first two against Matt and Matt using the trusty hard bat, but not winning a set despite some good games. He switched to a modern bat (with Tenergy 64 no less) for his match with Nick, but still couldn’t’ break his duck.
Matt Haynes was untroubled all night, barely breaking a sweat as he was offering Fig rolls around like nobodies business. He also helped secure the doubles with Matt Horrocks.
The only success for a Monarchs team who are eyeing a top 3 finish came from the Scottish wonder of the world, Ian Johnston.
He won a very scrappy game against Nick in 4, before holding off a charge from Matt Horrocks, also in 4.
If Monarchs are going to reclaim their Greenleys supremacy, they will surely have to up their game.

Fun fact - Monarchs have 3 players called Dave and 3 players who play with hard bats - If they don’t manage to field those teams together this year, it’ll be a travesty!
