Monarchs fall short of dethroning Kings
In a hotly anticipated contest, 2nd place Monarchs hosted their stablemates, Kings, hoping to overturn the two point deficit at the top of the table.
Any win for the Monarchs would see them take top place on matches won/drawn/lost.
Ian, Tomek and Martin were the gracious hosts of Nick, Matt and Guy.
The unbeaten Matt wasted little time getting things started, as he saw off Tomek in 3 games.
Nick followed suit against Ian, avenging his 3-1 defeat from earlier in the year, to waltz through the Scottish superstar in 3 games as well.
Guy was made to work significantly harder against the jet lagged, boom making and CHO taking Monarch, that is Martin Hall. Martin had two match points in the 5th, but ultimately fell short as Guy ground out a fine win.
The doubles was one way traffic after Tomek and Ian had comfortably won the first. Nick and Matt finally finding some rhythm to take it 3-1.
At 4-0 down, this looked to be a disaster for the title chasing Monarchs, and with Ian facing off against Matt (whom he previously lost 3-0 in the first match of the year), things didn’t look to be improving.
5 minutes later however, the Scottish hard batted ace was comfortably 2-0 up! Normality was restored in the 3rd, as Matt won it 11-6, but Ian played an absolute blinder in the 4th to seal the deal, and beat the unbeatable!
Tomek didn’t need 4 sets against Guy, as he won comfortably in three, before Nick did the same against old foe Martin.
Another 3-0 followed for Ian over Guy, which was followed by another 3-0 for Matt against Martin.
Tomek and Nick are always in close matches, and I’m pretty sure it’s about 50/50 for their careers. It was Tomeks night tonight, as he just about did enough to get over the line in 4, to limit the damage done on the night.
They face off against each other next week for the final time this season, in what could end up proving to be a pivotal moment for the league.
