Kings reign supreme over stablemates Monarchs!
It took 15 matches and 5 months before Greenleys Kings registered their first win of the 2017/18 season. However it's taken 1 week to match that achievement in the 2018/19 campaign.
The trio of Nick Howard, Guy Sparrow and Jordan Wood faced off against Iain Dummitt, Ian Johnston and Tomak.
On paper, this looked a tasty encounter, and If I was a betting man, I would have gone for a draw.
First up was Nick and Tomak. If memory serves, Tomak held a 2-1 head to head over the Kings captain from last seasons results.
Howard stormed off into a 2-0 lead, before Tomak fought back to 2-2.
The 5th was one way traffic, with Howard romping to a 9-2 lead, and had pretty much sealed the win. However Tomak produced some inspired table tennis on his way back to a 8-10 deficit...... before missing his own serve to hand the match to an extremely relieved Howard!
Dummet and Sparrow were next up, and despite a strong showing, Iain couldn't match Guy, who continued his excellent form from the back end of last year.
Jordan and Ian Johnston followed; and the hard bat of Johnston found himself fortune to be in a 2-0 lead. That 2-0 lead vanished into a 2-2 tie, before Jordan increased the pressure on the sand paper superstar, and squeezed the 5th end 11-9.
The doubles was over before it began - The duo of Sparrow and Howard, fresh off their summer league triumphs dominated from start to finish - Winning 3-0.
Dummett and Howard were next, and despite Dummett showing signs of his talent by winning the second end 12-10, he was too inconsistent to cause trouble in the other 3 which Howard won comfortably.
Half way through the match and Kings led 5-0........
The rout was brought to an end by an inspired Tomak, who thumped Jordan 3-0, dropping just 14 points.
This was backed up by  Johnston beating Sparrow in 3 very close games, before Dummett got his first win of the night against Jordan in 3 more close ends.
From 5-0 up, the Kings were fighting for the draw at 5-3 with 2 to play.
Howard and Johnston were next. Having played each other 7 times in the past year, Howard was nursing a 6-1 losing record, despite some very close matches.
This record looked to be heading the wrong way, after he threw away the first 2 ends 12-10 and 11-9, despite being in strong positions to win.
Then again, Ian doesn't play on TV for nothing, and I’m yet to see a better player with what is ultimately a slab of wood and a few pimples.
The next 2 ends went comfortably to Howard, which set up a tense final set.
It never really lived up to the hype of the rest of the match, and Howard found himself 3 or 4 points ahead for the entire set, before finishing off his hat-trick by winning 11-6 in the final end.
Last but not least, Tomak and Sparrow took to the table at about 10:20pm. Clearly not wanting to go home, they played out the 4th 5 ender of the night - The Kings having won the previous 3.
Guy took the first, before Tomak hit some form for the next 2.
Somehow Guy won the 4th with some brutal hitting, before holding his nerve to win the 5th just after 11pm.
With the previous season being the first time the Kings have ever finished ahead of the Monarchs, and the result tonight, are we seeing a changing of the guard in the Greenleys camp?
It's a long season..... I wouldn't like to bet on any of it right now!
