MARVELLOUS MERVYN RESCUES THE DRAW
A great match on which to end the year’s play in Division 1 with the top two sides going head to head in a re-arranged end of season fixture. Having beaten each other in their two earlier clashes, a hard fought draw seemed a fair conclusion this time round for MK club-mates Phoenix and Topspin.
Man of the match was Topspin’s Mervyn Kelly with a brilliantly constructed hat-trick. He gave notice of his hot form in the opening set of the night against Alan Bolding, who was on an unbeaten run of 37. As good as Mervyn’s two winged attacking game was working it seemed that Alan was about to extend his run of wins when he changed ends 5-3 up in the decider. Alan rarely relinquishes the lead in a tight situation but Mervyn had other ideas and he swept past the ace defender with aplomb, taking 8 of the last 11 points. Straight game wins followed against namesake Mervyn Phillips and then Terry Lau, the last set for the loss of a mere 14 points. Russell Penn and Tanmay Tijare chipped in with a win each at Terry’s expense for Topspin’s other sets.
For Phoenix, who finished as champions, Alan and Mervyn P. took two a-piece and Alan partnered Gerald Ridgway, his first team involvement since early February, to the doubles win that proved crucial in what was Phoenix’ only draw all season.
