SWEET REVENGE FOR RUSSELL

Good result for Topspin with hat-tricks from Russell Penn and myself, plus a brace from Mervyn Kelly, despite being pushed all the way by our visitors tonight.

The main focus of attention was on the clash between Russell and Christine Scaysbrook, following Christine’s win last week when they met in a Premier Division fixture. Since then the Witney girl has seen some good action in the Midlands Masters at Wolverhampton at the weekend, so her game was finely tuned. But it was Russell who prevailed this time round over 4 games. Undaunted Christine then led me 2 games to nil before losing and went on to beat Mervyn with her forehand kill a strong feature. Then she was seen scribling furiously in her notebook, Biao Wang style, on how to beat me next time.

I was also 2 games down to Ian Brown and relinquished a 6-1 lead in the 5th before pulling through. Ian himself was on the wrong end of a couple of Russell comebacks from 8-4 down in both their 3rd & 4th games. So it was a topsy turvy night all round with John Stamp missing out over 4 games against all his opponents.

Topspin still can’t win a doubles though despite changing the combination, going down 8-11 in the decider. That’s 4 defeats from 4 starts now. Still, our singles form is holding up well and top of the League again for another week can’t be bad.
