JORDAN MARATHON AND A DOUBLES DELIGHT

A good night’s work for my lowly MK Topspin side in the den of runaway League leaders Greenleys Kings.

Kings gave a rare post marriage MK League appearance to the former Jordan Natalie Wood, alongside regulars Nick Howard and Guy Sparrow.  Skipper Nick showed his dedication to his team by driving from Exeter at 3.00pm to arrive in time for the big match.  Although he was shattered he still managed to eke out a scratchy hat-trick despite dropping 4 games along the way.  Guy was untroubled in joining him on a maximum.

The most interesting encounters came against Jordan with all her sets ending 12-10 in the 5th, which couldn’t have happened too often.  The Northants hitter rode her luck a little when beating Russell Penn and myself before falling to Mervyn Kelly.  Russell held 5 match points in their 4th game but failed to covert any of them for the win.  Jordan’s marathon effort meant she played out a total of 305 points, the most by anyone this season and more than twice as many as Guy on the night.  9 of her 15 games were decided by 2-point margins.

But, for us, the doubles set was by far the highlight of the evening as 0% Russell/Mervyn took on 100% Nick/Guy to prove that miracles do happen.  There was no indication of an upset as the esteemed King’s pair strolled into an easy first game lead and maybe an eyebrow was raised when the Topspin duo sneaked the 2nd game on deuce to level.  But after that it was a ‘no holds barred’ contest with a lot of long hitting rallies and Russell/Mervyn playing out of their skins to give as good as they got.   And, importantly, they held their nerve ‘at the death’, staying in positive mode without the recklessness which has cost them dear in the past.  Fantastic achievement.  No praise is high enough.
