MERVE STOPS TOPSPIN WIPEOUT

After his wonderful performance for us last week, Jit Pitamber kept his place in my Topspin team in the absence of Russell Penn, regrettably missing his first match of the season, a move which required re-registration from his former Div 1 side Powers. But despite Jit’s great form at the moment (a hat-trick for MK Powers verses OU Primes the night before), he couldn’t make any impression against our club-mates and the last season’s champions Spinners, going down in straight games on each visit to the table.

I shared the same fate, leaving it to Mervyn Kelly to log our sole game win in order to prevent a 30-0 game wipe-out in a 10-0 defeat.

Spinners were highly motivated of course, still in with a good chance of runners-up spot in the League and captain Alan Cherry a equally good bet to finish top of the averages if his took his 3 wins as expected. In the end a fine victory by runners-up rivals Greenleys Monarchs over their Greenleys club-mates Kings thwarted Spinners chances and they missed out by a mere 2 points.

But Alan did make it to the top spot (once again), overtaking his Monarchs’ rival Tomek Nowakowski in the last set of the night against me to squeeze into an unassailable 0.26% lead. Congratulation Alan. Tim Cheek and Jecu Aurelian were the other Spinners’ players.

No Topspin player has ever beaten a Spinner in 6 attempts now. Our only sets against them have come from walk-overs when Spinners failed to turn out a full side.

SHOCK STAT : Russell Penn missing a Topspin match!! If I had a £1 for every person asking me ‘where’s Russell ?” I’d have had enough to cover my own match fee and Mervyn’s too. In the past 12 months Russell had played in 40 consecutive Topspin matches incorporating both Winter and Summer Leagues and all the Cup matches to boot. His absence was certainly noticed!

Man of the match : Alan Cherry
