DEBUT WIN COMES HOWARD’S WAY

Well into the evening a joyful cry of ‘YES’ could be heard echoing around a pretty much empty MK clubroom, the participants of the other Wednesday night matches having long since departed with the exception of genial John Bradbury, patiently waiting to lock up the premises.  A split second earlier the protagonist responsible,  Phoenix’ Ivor Howard, had hit a peach of a forehand drive, the final shot against Topspin’s Mervyn Kelly to give his team victory with an unassailable 6-2 lead. More importantly though, Ivor had broken his duck in recording his first ever Premier singles win.

“What, still two games to go?” says a surprised John. But they didn’t take long, rattled off in half an hour across two tables with everyone home before midnight, so no bother.  A win for Alan Bolding over Russell Penn and a loss for Ioan Constantin against me put the match to bed with Phoenix triumphant 7-3.

My Topspin team always enjoy our matches with Phoenix, who’ve we’ve played 14 times now since our formation in 2015, more than any other opponent (and we’re still ahead on matches won!).  Last season we managed to register all three results (win, lose, draw), and they’re nearly always close encounters.
