TITLE FOR PHOENIX

Congratulations to MK Phoenix who won the Division tonight as my Topspin team failed to gain the 7 sets required to take the championship for ourselves. Bit surprised though that no-one from Phoenix was here to witness their triumph. Had the roles been reversed, wild horses would not have kept me away (and cheering on Pumas vociferously). The final nail in our coffin came in the 5th set when the indomitable Andy Smith beat Mervyn Kelly over 4 games to sent us 4-1 down and put the elusive title out of reach. Prior to that we had of course made a disaesterous start with just the one win when Mervyn beat Chris Belton in 5 tough games. Mervyn came into the match needing a hat-trick for an overall 50% average in his Topspin ‘career’ in this, his 53rd match, but his defeat to Andy put a stop to that.

Our failure to win the League though could be put down to our shocking doubles record throughout the season with only 3 sets won, 9 fewer than Phoenix. Last year’s winners Greenleys Warriors got away with only 4 doubles wins but we couldn’t even eaqual that record. Tonight was typical of our season’s doubles play with a straight games defeat.

In this match Mervyn and I won 2 each for Topspin and Andy walked away with yet another maximum for Pumas. I had to save 3 match points against Chris Belton along the way, his standard of play as always making a mockery of his far too modest average. A winless Masoud Nassor played up from division 2 for Topspin whilst Keith Carrington completed the Pumas’ compliment.
