TOPSPIN GAIN PRECIOUS POINT

With Topspin captain Russell Penn in India we were delighted to give a debut to Hit n Hope’s Paul Tompkins, playing up from Div. 2.  Paul has a rich pedigree in MK, being part of the title winning MK Likely Lads squad from 2006 (playing alongside the likes of Jon Hall) and a former Championship Doubles winner with Dave Murphy.  Paul retired around then and only started up again this Summer.  The road to former glories is proving to be a long one for him though.

This was another of those proverbial matches of two halves.  In the first five sets we only picked up one game when I extended Peter Bannister.  Paul did look like taking at least one game off Mark Purcell as he led 10-5 in the first.  But a few minutes later Mark was leading 6-0 in the second wit

h the first already to his credit.  Mervyn Kelly couldn’t make much headway for Topspin and Dave Allison was his usual ruthless self for Kingpins.

However we were much more resilient in the second period with one set won, when I beat Mark 12-10 in the 5th, and all the others going to a 4th game. Incidentally, the battles between Dave and myself date from 1983, which is the longest running rivalry in the Premiership. A bit one-sided though with Dave now leading 55-7.

The best news for us on the night was a 10-0 defeat for fellow strugglers MK Phoenix on the next table, as this takes us another precious point nearer to them at the bottom of the League.
