BUBBLE BURSTS FOR MERVYN BUT TOPSPIN STILL ON TRACK
An early top of the table clash saw Topspin pull off another good victory. Mervyn Kelly took his unbeaten start to the season to 7 sets over Div 2 stand-in Ivor Howard before relinquishing his record to an ‘on fire’ Terry Lau and then succumb easily to Phoenix summer signing Ioan Constantin, in the final set of the night, to provide Ioan with a fine brace.
However I was playing well enough to win all mine in straight games while a resurgence in Russell Penn’s form saw him eventually take out Terry after a poor start, a win that proved crucial in the context of the match. A blank here for Ivor tonight.
Topspin lost the doubles again with Terry consistently coming up with some cracking winners for Phoenix over 4 tight games.
