Mursley Hawks faced visitors Leighton Buzzard Spitfires - both a new name for the opponents, and three new players compared to last season.
A close match was expected, with Hawks two points ahead in the League Table, but with Spitfires having a match in hand.
Hawks soared into early advantage, going 4-0 up as they won the first three singles plus the doubles (at 12-10 in the fifth), and although Spitfires
hit back with a couple of wins, continued to increase their advantage to take an unexpected 8-2 victory, which (albeit temporarily) puts them top
of the table - until other teams play their matches in hand! Martin Johnson and David Bartlett collected trebles for Hawks, whilst Ian Spanswick
collected one win, plus teamed up with David to snatch the doubles. The wins for Spitfires came from Alan Chandler and Filip Simek, with Paul
Baker going away without a win.
The final scoreline rather flattered Hawks, with Spitfires twice losing out in close fifth games, and several tight four game sets, but the luck seemed
to favour the home team. Alan, especially, was unlucky to only win once, just losing out in five games in a classic hit / counterhit game with David,
as well as that loss at deuce in the doubles, and had also gone 1-0 up against Martin, early on. Filip showed some fierce hitting as he claimed his
straight games win against Ian, as well as taking a game each from David and Martin.
Player of the Match : David Bartlett for his treble plus doubles win.
