Greenleys Derby Goes The Way of The Kings
The in-form Ricky Taiwo led his 3rd placed Warriors of Darren Ward and new boy William Egbuna to play Nick Howard, Guy Sparrow and Jordan Moss.
Ricky has had an outstanding season so far by anyones standards. 20 wins from 24 matches with 2 losses in 5 and 2 losses in 4.
Unfortunately for the Warriors linchpin, his night didn’t go to plan!
He was stunned by Nick Howard in the opener, losing his first 3-0 of the year, only to meet an inspired Guy Sparrow in the last match of the night, where he suffered another 3-0 loss (I heard some mumblings about nets and edges….. but who’s counting?)
He managed to save his night by seeing off Jordan Moss across 4 hotly contested sets, and he also helped in the doubles as he paired up with Darren to take down Nick and Jordan in 3.
Aside from the doubles, Howard rattled through his 3 games in double quick fashion, winning them all 3-0. Although Darren will be kicking himself for not taking at least 1 (and probably two!)
Guy could have easily had a hat trick, but 3-0 victories over Ricky and William were spoilt by an 11-8 loss to Darren in 5 (who had an excellent night with 2 important wins).
Jordan by her own admission played some of her best table tennis all season, but it was a night of tiny margins as she took down William 3-1 before losing by the same scoreline to both Darren and Ricky in very close games.
It’s good to see a new face with William joining the league, another player who is coming back to the sport after 20 years away, and I’m sure he’ll find his footing soon enough.
