TON UP FOR TOPSPIN BUT CELEBRATIONS PUT ON HOLD

This was my Topspin team’s 100th League match (44 won), coming appropriately against the team that we have played against the most (11).  The wrong result though which scuppered the evening’s planned celebrations.

We made a disaesterous start with Alan Bolding beating me and Mervyn Kelly going down to Terry Lau.  Russell Penn steadied the ship against Gerald Ridgway but then a very much in-form Alan/Terry combo overwhelmed us in the doubles to put us 3-1 down and struggling.  We did manage to share the remaining 6 sets but the damage was already done as we slid to our first defeat of the season.

There were some good moments for us despite Mervyn not being ale to match his exploits of the past 2 outings and leaving Russell and me to win two each.  I was a bit airy-fairy at times but well pleased that I came from behind in the deciding games with both Gerald and Terry.  Russell was in pretty good nick for a player carrying a nasty dog bite injury to his heavily bandaged left hand which the doctor had advised needed a fortnight’s rest.  But he loves his table tennis and it takes more than that to keep him away.  In fact Russell has missed very few of those first hundred matches for Topspin so we’re keeping the champagne on ice for when he reaches his own centenary of appearances for the team shortly.  As long as we finish with a win of course!

Man of the match : Alan Bolding (a class apart)
