No joy for the Milton Keynes teams at the annual Bucks County Inter-League competition on Sunday, which was again held at Aylesbury’s Quarrendon headquarters. Multiple times past winners MK have yet to win the main competition since it’s reincarnation in 2015 after an 8 year lapse. 4 Leagues provided 8 teams between them split into 2 Divisions of 4 teams, a tried and tested format for a great day’s play.

DIVISION 1
Aylesbury fielded a strong team in defence of their title but came second best to High Wycome this time. MK lost 8-1 to Wycombe and 5-4 to Aylesbury. Dakshin Subramanain showed good form in taking the set against Wycombe with a win over Mark Banks followed by a brace against Aylesbury, who also had their 2nd team in this division losing every match. MK beat them 6-3 with a maximum from Dakshin, a brace from Alan Cherry and Mark Purcell’s only win of the day, when he beat Darren Palmer. High Wycombe’s Rob Hansell went through the day undefeated.

DIVISION 2
MK ‘B’ won this division last year with Dan Appanna, Nigel Metcalfe and Peter Bannister. Unfortunately MK ‘B’s side were severely hampered by illness to Ollie Horswell this time. He bravely opted to play in the opening match with my MK ‘C’ team though unfit to do so and lost easily to Carl Furness, Biao Wang and me with several trips to the bathroom in between. Ollie wisely decided not to continue and went home, leaving the team a man down for the other matches, a 4-5 loss to Chalfont and an 8-1 defeat to High Wycombe. Tom Nowakowski and Minesh Pitamber made up the team and played well without much luck for a brace each against Chalfont while the side’s consolation win against High Wycombe came courtesy of Tom’s win over Julie Lawrence. Minesh took Tim Cheek, unbeaten on the day, to a deciding game here as baby brother JIten was winning the Handicap Singles event back at MKTTC.

MK’C’ opened with that 6-3 win over MK’B’ with a maximum from me and a brace from Biao Wang. We crashed out to Wycombe 7-2 with just Biao and me beating Julie, before recovering to take 2nd spot with a 6-3 win over Chalfont (Biao 3, me 2 and a win from Carl in his last set of the day).

Mike Atkinson ran the competition with his usual ruthless efficiency ensuring an early finish. Many thanks to him as always.
