Mursley Swallows 5 - 5 Greenleys Cardinals
Final match of the season, and both teams were safely in mid-table, as seventh placed Swallows took on fifth placed Cardinals, with Cardinals having won 6-4 when they played in the first half of the season. Mursley's John Paul was unwell, to add to Roger Shelton being injured, so Andy Palmer kindly agreed to play up, to join Peter Sear and Martin Johnson (though Andy was also keeping an eagle eye on the crucial promotion match of his own Hawks team, in Division 3, taking place on the adjacent table)! Martin gave Swallows a good start, beating James Zeng three straight, with his hitting going well. Peter was next on against Dwight Edwards, and Peter went ahead early, only for Dwight to unleash some great shots, to level and take it to decider, which Peter won 11-8 in the fifth. Andy then took on Dan Englander, but Dan's forehands were good enough to take him though in four fairly close legs. Peter/Martin then won the doubles against Dan/Dwight, to put the home team 3-1 up, and give them hopes of reversing the previous loss? Peter and James then battled out another five legs, but this time Peter, despite going 2-0 up, was just on the losing end of it, as James came through to pull one back for the visitors. Martin and Dan then battled out another five legger, with Martin narrowly winning the first two legs, only for Dan to up his game and draw level at 2-2. The fifth was neck and neck, but Martin sneaked ahead at the death, to win the decider 11-8, and so put the home team 4-2 up. Dwight then pulled it back to 4-3, as he found his hitting range against Andy, to win over four close legs. Dan then powered through against Peter to go two legs up, and despite Peter pulling one back, Dan just won in leg 4 at deuce, whilst James overcame Andy (despite losing the 3rd leg 11-0) as the visitors moved ahead for the first time at 4-5. However, it ended honours even, as Martin won in four very close legs against Dwight, whose hitting was sublime, at times, but just enough errors to allow the home team to snatch their third draw in the last five matches (having not drawn previously), as both teams maintained their positions in the end of the season table.
