Mursely Hawks 6 - 4 Mursley Swallows
Newly promoted Mursley Hawks took on their own Club's Swallows team, in their first Division 1 fixture. A close match was expected, and was delivered!
Hawks top player Merv Phillips went on first against Martin Johnson, and gave Hawks the lead with a three straight games wins, as Merv maintained his winning run from last season, whilst Martin appeared a little 'ring rusty'. Next up it was Swallows captain, Peter Sear, who levelled the contest in four games against Andy Palmer. Andy King then took the home team back into the lead against Roger Shelton, despite dropping the opening game, to win in four. Andy K and Merv then took on Peter and Martin, and in an ebb and flow double encounter, edged through in the fifth, to put Hawks 3-1 up. Another five-gamer followed, as Andy P went two up against Martin, only to be pegged back, with Martin eventually sneaking it at 13-11 in the decider. Merv restored Hawks' two set advantage with a comfortable win over Roger, before Peter grabbed one back for Swallows, edging out Andy K in three games, and then Roger got on the board in another tight encounter, taking it 11-8 in the fifth against Andy P, to leave the match score at 4-4. However, Hawks were not to be denied, and took the final two sets, each in four games, as Andy K beat Martin, and then Merv beat Peter (taking Merv's League winning run up to 30), to clearly announce that Hawks are not out of their depth in the higher division.
