ANOTHER SARAH SUPER SHOW

Meryn Kelly made a welcome return to the Topspin fold after missing the first couple of matches of the season, but couldn’t bring us any nearer to our first win after we made a disaesterous start in dropping all of the opening singles sets.

The pick of these was by Clare Styles, who triumphed in her very first ever MK Premier set in a topsy turvy battle with Russell Penn.  Some superb attacking saw her dominate for two and a half games only to be caught at 9-9 in the 3rd and for Russell to then take control of the rallies up until he led 5-0 in the 5th.  Then it was all change again as Clare showed true grit and determination to claw her way back into the contest, eventually coming home 15-13 when Russell served off the end of the table.

We battled on, of course, and it wasn’t until 10.20 pm and after the hall had emptied from the other matches that Powers secured their 6th set and with it victory in the match.  This again involved Russell as he let slip a 2-1 game lead to miss out at 11-9 in the 5th to Minesh Pitamber.
Mervyn & I beat Clare comfortably and won the doubles against Sarah Hudson and Clare for Topspin’s only wins.  It might have been 4 when I held a couple of match points over Minesh but, as usual, he hit his way out of trouble.

Sarah was sensational on the night, winning all her sets in her fast attacking style and with plenty to spare too.  The Luton Championship singles holder has certainly made a bright start to her season, carrying on where she left off at Greenleys Warriors a fortnight ago.
