BOLDING BATTLES IN VAIN

Topspin’s opponents have started the new year brightly, banishing those relegation blues after 2 disastrous seasons finishing bottom of Premier and then Div. 1. Only the restructuring of the divisional format saved Phoenix from playing in the 3rd tier this time round but they are more than holding their own this term with plenty of fighting spirit on display.

And a fighting display was certainly what Alan Bolding produced with a fatiguing maximum tonight as the match duration nearly reached the 4 hour mark (same as Kingpins game on next table). Alan was back to near his best form as he ground out a set of terrific results. Unfortunately for Phoenix neither Terry Lau nor Gerald Ridgway could get on the score-sheet, though they fought long & hard for that elusive victory, and Phoenix other set came from the doubles where Alan & Gerald ‘parked the bus’ which Topspin were unable to penetrate.

So it was a case of braces all round for Mervyn Kelly , Russell Penn and me with both Mervyn & Russell winning and losing over 5-game sets.
