“It’s great to be back” said Powers’ Sarah Hudson on her return to League action following an enforced 11 month lay-off. And it was great to welcome back my ex team-mate of many years standing too. Sarah played with all her old zest and was rewarded with a straight games win over Russell Penn after close encounters with me and Mervyn Kelly.

There was a wonderful symmetry about tonight’s sets with the first 6 going to 4 games, the next 2 to 5 with the last 2 closed out in straights. Mervyn was on fire as he joined me on a maximum though we lost the doubles together. Pete Tillotson, with his usual tenacity, and Clare Styles completed the Powers line-up.
