TOPSPIN TRIUMPH AT LAST
A repeat of the opening week’s fixtures saw Topspin playing away for the 6th time in 7 weeks in this topsy-turvy season. In every match so far I had opened our innings and been sent packing by the opposition without scoring, usually in straight games. So for this one, we decided to shake up the order and sent Mervyn Kelly out to bat first instead. Same result though, he couldn’t pierce through that spidery Ioan Constantin defence and we started one down again anyway.
But things looked up when I beat Mervyn Phillips and Russell Penn and myself won a rare doubles set to square the match at 2-2 after Alan Bolding had beaten Russell at set 3. We then took 2 wins in the next round of sets, only losing out in the battle of the 2 Mervyns. Pick of the wins here was Russell coming from 2 down to defeat Ioan with his trademark diagonal strikes much in evidence.
So we entered the last exchanges with a delicate 4-3 lead, which was soon erased when Mervyn P beat Russell. No need to fear though as Mervyn K hit brilliantly to beat Alan in the 9th set and I got past Ioan in the last to secure our (relatively new) team’s first ever Premier success, looking satorially good too in our custom made team shirts, new for this season.
