A great result for Topspin who were quickly into a 5-0 lead before Gerald Ridgway could stop the rot with a 5-game win over Russell Penn. This included a 3-straight doubles win which was good to achieve against the 2nd rated doubles team in the division as this gives us confidence going forward. I’ve mentioned before that I can’t account for our poor doubles record this season when it’s been so good in the past.

Gerald picked up another win in the final set by tying up Mervyn Kelly’s attack pretty conclusively and Terry Lau also beat Mervyn for Phoenix’ other win. Carl Furness completed the Phoenix line-up and could never get his ‘big’ game going, perhaps best epitomized by his strong come-back from 5-9 down to 9-9 in the decider against Mervyn only for Carl to then serve into the net.  I enjoyed some comfortable wins all round to force myself into contention for ‘player of the week’.

Topspin have opened up a 6 point gap over Phoenix now in that tight 4-way battle that is emerging for runners-up spot.
