When Peter Bannister thumped me 11-0 in the opening game of the evening on his way to an easy win I feared the worst for my Topspin team, another annihilation was on the cards.  But thankfully it wasn’t to be as Russell Penn levelled the scores straight away and Pete never won another set.

That second set win, against an out of sorts Craig Brown over 4 games, was a career best for Russell as he brought his fine form from last week along to this match and often dominated the exchanges with his fast playing style.  I also managed to beat Craig and Mervyn Kelly only lost to him at 11-8 in the 5th.

Mervyn and Russell contained ‘Pistol’ Pete very well too, both winning at 11-7 in the decider for our remaining successes.  Russell had missed a couple of match points at the end of his 4th game and I dreaded him losing the 5th and coming off the table with his infamous “should have won that” post match comment.  As it was it was left to Pete to come out with his own renowned  "next time” remark.

Dave Allison was the Kingpin in true form though, winning 3-straight each time. Still, a very good night for Topspin.
