This was my 50th match with Russell in my side. He always turns up, is as keen as mustard and 100% reliable. Russell’s also the 33rd player I’ve played 50 or more matches with as a team-mate, 3 of which are playing in MK this season – Julian Adams (252 matches as team-mate) and Sarah Hudson (118) & Gerald Ridgway (also 50). We celebrated tonight with a hat-trick each against the always useful Eagles side of Geoff Callaway, Barry Bishop and Dave Plumb. Russell was sensational and says this is the first time he’s beaten either Geoff or Barry, which I find hard to believe. His no nonsense hitting was surreal at times and well worthy of Guy Sparrow on the next table.

Bad night for Mevyn Kelly though, who never got going and continued his bad run. No win in his last 7 sets now. In fact Mervyn slumped below a 50% average for the first time tonight. He started the season with a maximum and it’s been downhill ever since, winning two-thirds of his season’s sets in the first third of the season, so the end has not come quick enough for him. And when you consider Mervyn's beaten Biao Wang & Ricky Taiwo he should be getting better returns than this.

So Topspin finish in 4th place and I’m looking forward to next year already.
