Kings hold off spirited Warriors
Kings hold off spirited Warriors
With no fewer than 10 registered players on the Warriors roster, it’s always a fun surprise to see who turns up each week.
This week it was the ever present Ricky Taiwo, Ollie Horswell and newcomer to the league, Tony Gorman. Tony is a veteran of many leagues in the area (Oxford, Leamington and Banbury to name a few), so you may have seen his name around.
The Kings fielded Nick Howard, Matt Haynes and Guy Sparrow.
Nick and Ricky started things off, with normality restored as Nick avenged his 4-3 defeat in the summer league, to take a comfortable 3-1 victory.
Ollie started brightly against the unbeaten Matt, taking the first set 13-11. But he couldn’t stop the Haynes train in full steam, and also fell to a 3-1 deafest.
Tony made an impressive debut with some big hitting against a slow starting Sparrow. Guy fought his way back to the 5th set, but eventually succumbed 11-8 to give Tony a fine win.
The doubles looked incredibly one sided one paper…. Top 8 Champion, Nick, with MK Open champion Matt took on the self titled…. “worst doubles pairing in the world” (according to Ollie at least). Some say the last time Ricky won a doubles match was before the famous concrete cows of MK were installed…… (in 1978 no less!)
But Ricky and Ollie looked set to shock the nation by storming into a 2-0 lead! Unfortunately for them, that’s where the fun ended, and the pairing of Nick and Matt rolled through the final 3 sets to take the victory.
Ollie and Nick played out a rather dull game with moments of brilliance on both sides, but it was Nick who took it in 3.
Guy’s miserable night continued against Ricky as he misfired on many a forehand, with Ricky playing some tight stuff to seal it in 4, before Matt wasted little time in despatching Tony in 3.
Guy then completed a night to forget as Ollie took the honours in 4, before Tony put on a storming display against a misfiring Nick to take the 4th win of the night for the Warriors.
“Only” Matt Haynes stood in the way of Ricky securing an unlikely draw for his beloved Warriors, and whilst I’d love to tell you it was a nail biter to the end…. Matt was always in control as he rounded off a 6-4 victory for the unbeaten Kings.
