PEERLESS PAUL TOPPLES TOPSPIN TRIO

Topspin’s annual visit to the only subterranean venue in MK league (Forster Institute) resulted in our 6th win from 6 matches despite the brilliance of Paul Haigh who fought a one-man battle for the home side. Paul's fine touch tonight saw him race to straight game wins over Mervyn Kelly and myself with consummate ease before he found himself trailing by 2 games to Russell Penn. But Paul dug deep to raise his own game even higher and once he survived a tricky 3rd game, which stood at 9-9, Paul romped home in the 4th and 5th.

Paul’s win against me relieved me of my 100% record for the season and ended a run of 20 wins, which is the best in the Division since a Michael Wilkins 31 run of wins in 2015 was ended, ironically enough, by Russell Penn.

It was a good quality match with everyone playing pretty well. David Broome and Fabrice Spelta had also both taken Russell to a decider, David at one stage leading him 2-1 in games and Fabrice 2-0. The doubles went Topspin’s way with Mervyn and me besting Paul and David to continue Van Hire’s winless run this season. And in an big hitting finale Mervyn had to overcome David in yet another exciting 5-game set.
