As an Aylesbury team-mate of Biao Wang I get a close up view of the red hot form he’s been in this season, already seeing off Aylesbury’s highly rated town champion Lee Rogerson, architect of their Bucks Inter-League win last year when MK (Alan Cherry, Dan Smalley, Craig Brown) finished a poor 3rd. So what chance did us lesser players have tonight? Very little, or so I thought going into the match.

Biao cruised through his first 2 sets against me and Russell Penn without dropping a game but then came unstuck against some brilliant hitting from Mervyn Kelly, who notched up the greatest win of his career. This was all the more remarkably as he had lost his own previous sets against Paul Haigh and David Broome. Tough going against David though, who has a habit of losing in 5, as Mervyn pulled back from 1-6 to 7-9 in the decider before going down. Topspin’s other 2 wins came at David’s expense.

This was Topspin’s 50th match in our short history but any celebrations went out the window as this was our joint biggest defeat in that time. As for the result, it certainly made a mockery of David Broome’s prediction that Van Hire would finish the season in 7th position.

Well played to Van Hire tonight. A great match.
