Primes opted to bring this match forward by 72 hours and change venue to the Club Studio. I thought this impressive dance studio, with a full length mirror down one side, was going to prove to be the O.U’s secret weapon when they raced into a 2-0 lead with Patrick Wong beating me and Yi Cao beating Russell Penn quite easily.

But Mervyn Kelly had other ideas. Boosted by his golden win over Biao Wang last week, Mervyn found these fellow pen-holders held no terrors as he blasted his way to a hat-trick, albeit from a dodgy start when 2-1 down in games against Martin Lok to win 11-8 in the 5th. This was where our recovery began, stretching to 7 consecutive sets before Patrick beat Russell in straight games at the end of the night.

The doubles was a close affair at set 4, another crucial stage of the match. Mervyn and I trailed by 2 games when at 9-9 in 3rd  Martin helpfully mishit a service under the table, after which we sneaked home and then got stronger as the set progressed. Topspin’s first doubles win of the season too.

So, a welcome return to top spot, for 24 hours anyway, until Greenleys Warriors play again.
