Warriors hold their nerve to beat Kings
The trio of Gary Deakin, Nick Howard and Guy Sparrow hosted Ricky Taiwo, Ollie Horswell and Colin Hueang last night.
The Kings had only lost twice up until then, one of which coming at the hands of Warriors themselves (the other from Sasaki).
Arguably the match of the night was first on centre table, with the resurgent Deakin taking on the new superstar, Colin.
It took a while for the veteran to get going, falling 2-0 behind through many unforced errors - But Deakin showed he still has what it takes to compete to claw it back to 2-2.
A nip and tuck final set proved that consistency is invaluable, as Deakin lost the lead from a strong position, and ultimately the match, 11-8 in the 5th.
Nick and Ricky played out a typical gritty encounter next. Howard just about pulled through in 4 tough sets, but again, a marked improvement from the Warriors captain.
Guy and Ollie finished off round one, and the young warrior was in no mood to mess around, defeating sparrow 3-0 in a flash.
The first time pairing of Deakin and Howard took on Hueang and Taiwo in the doubles. Shock waves reverberated around the crowd when Taiwo dropped the impressive Horswell, but he saved face by backing up his decision with a fine performance in the doubles.
Warriors taking it in 4.
Howard and Hueang stayed on for their singles, and it was a carbon copy of the previous match they had. Nick never finding his rhythm against an awkward Colin, with the latter taking it in 4.
At the same time, Deakin was dismantling Ollie on the adjacent table - Experience toppling youth in 3 comfortable sets.
Nick and Ollie were next up, with the former still licking his wounds after Ollie came storming back from a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 last time they played.
No such luck this time, although after Howard stormed into a 2-0 lead, Ollie took a close 3rd, which set up a tense 4th (Howard took it 11-7).
Guy and Colin played out a few titanic sets, which Guy probably should have won 3-0. But, there’s a reason Colin hasn’t lost many, and his constant attack was too much in the end, pulling through in 4.
Deakin took on Taiwo to finish the match, trying to salvage at least 4 points on the night.
In truth, Deakin is improving every minute he plays, and he was far too good for Ricky, romping home in 3 very easy sets - Highlight of the match was Ricky diving full stretch to save game point in the second.
Spoiler alert - He didn’t make the shot, but it did look spectacular.
